Mapping of coastal values and condition, Tasmania

Assessment and mapping of foreshore values, condition and pressures for the Southern Natural Resource Management Region, Tasmania

As part of Tasmania’s Regional Natural Resource Management Framework, Aquenal was commissioned to develop mapping tools that characterise coastal management issues on the southern Tasmanian coastline. This was performed by compiling mapping layers for the following four main indices and 13 associated and more detailed sub-indices. Information for these indices was based on compilation of approximately 60 relevant datasets identified through literature and database reviews, web searches and field studies:

  • Natural values
  • Human use values
  • Pressures
  • Condition

The final mapping layers are available under the Natural Environment (Coastal Values) category on the Land Information System Tasmania (LIST) website. These data bridge a gap between existing mapping of coastal and marine habitats, form a basis for strategic management of foreshores in the region, and establish benchmarks and reference sites for assessing future change. Through a subsequent project, this approach is now being applied to the remainder of the Tasmanian coastline using a similar technique supplemented by new compatible mapping technologies.
