Marine Pests and Biofouling

Introduced marine pest and biofouling assessments are core components of Aquenal’s work and we are now recognised as a leading Australian authority in these fields. Our services include marine pest surveys, taxonomy, collection and database management, control plans, monitoring guidelines and policy review as well as biofouling inspections and management solutions. Our staff are highly skilled at both laboratory and in-situ identification of introduced and native marine species and have expertise in surveying these species from a wide range of natural and artificial habitats, and in temperate through to tropical environments. …Further information

Further Information

Our primary services in the fields of marine pest and biofouling assessments include:

  • Marine pest survey designs that are consistent with national guidelines
  • Marine pest baseline and monitoring surveys in ports and other at-risk environments
  • Investigation of suspected marine pest outbreaks
  • Marine pest taxonomy
  • Management of marine pest laboratory collections and databases
  • Biofouling risk assessments and inspections
  • Development of biofouling protocols and technological solutions
  • Marine pest control plans
  • Assessments of eradication and control technologies
  • Monitoring of the efficacy of pest control programs
  • Review of policies and monitoring guidelines for marine pests and biofouling

Aquenal has a diverse range of expertise in the detection and identification of marine pests in ballast water, biofouling, natural habitats and on artificial structures in temperate through to tropical environments. We perform field surveys in conjunction with desktop studies to identify native, introduced and cryptogenic (= status as native or introduced remains unclear) species present, assess risks to marine habitats and recommend feasible management strategies.

Our staff are highly skilled at both laboratory and in-situ identification of introduced species, whilst our database provides a valuable information resource on marine pest distributions. Through a range of projects, Aquenal collaborates with governments, research agencies and other stakeholders to review and develop management plans and monitoring guidelines for introduced marine pests.

An additional exciting area of our work is the development of innovative technological approaches to addressing biofouling risks. Please refer to additional information on our Biofouling Solutions.
